The artichoke is propagated asexually being in Argentina the use of seed a little known practice. In order to establish the optimum planting date cultivars sexual multiplication, this work was done inthe faculty of Agricultural Sciences National UniversityRosario located at 33º S and 60º 59' 1'O between 2003 and 2005. As experimental material Imperial Star (IS) and Violeto Invernale (VI) was used, taking place monthly plantings in a design completely randomized block from March to December 2003 and 2004. Number of chapters (NC), medium weight (MW), efficiency (RE), days to harvest (DAC) and days of harvest (DDC) were studied using analysis of variance and test Waller-Duncan for comparison of means. When analyzing planting dates in both cultivars highly significant differences in all variables. November sowing produced more NC (125.4 · 103), PM (179 g), RE (23.6 t · ha-1) and DDC without showing precocity, while June, although it was the earliest, yielded the lowest values in NC (29,2 · 103), PM (117,6 g), RE (3.4 t · ha-1) and DDC. For both cultivars sexual propagation November is the most recommended planting date to generate higher yields and at harvest time coincide competitive prices even generates higher gross income.
